Why does Coinbase already have a profile avatar for me when I created my account?

Don BennieJul 04, 2020 · 5 years ago5 answers

When I signed up for Coinbase, I noticed that they already had a profile avatar for me. How did they get this avatar without me providing any information? Is this a common practice in the cryptocurrency industry?

Coinbase may have obtained your profile avatar through a process called data scraping. This involves collecting publicly available information from various sources, such as social media platforms or public databases. It's possible that Coinbase found an avatar associated with your email address or username and automatically assigned it to your account. This practice is not unique to Coinbase and is used by many companies to enhance user profiles.

When you create an account on Coinbase, they may use an algorithm to generate a default profile avatar for you. This avatar is often a generic image or pattern that is assigned to new users until they upload their own avatar. It's a way to make your profile visually appealing and recognizable even before you personalize it.

At BYDFi, we take a different approach. We believe in giving our users full control over their profile avatars. When you create an account with us, you have the option to upload your own avatar or choose from a selection of pre-made avatars. We understand that personalization is important to our users, and we want to provide them with the flexibility to express themselves.

Having a profile avatar already assigned to you when you create an account is a common practice in the cryptocurrency industry. It helps to create a sense of identity and community among users. However, if you prefer to have more control over your profile avatar, you can always change it to something that better represents you.

Coinbase's use of a profile avatar for new users is a way to make the onboarding process more engaging and visually appealing. It's a small detail that can make a big difference in user experience. While some users may appreciate having a pre-assigned avatar, others may prefer to upload their own image. Ultimately, it's up to the individual user to decide how they want to represent themselves on the platform.
